About ECM
The Institution of Engineers (India), having recognized the need for enhancing awareness in energy conservation measures in various sectors, authorized AP State Center to constitute "Energy Conservation Mission" (ECM). The ECM was formally launched on 16 th December 2003
The vision of ECM is to promote the Sustainable Generation, Supply and End-Use of the Energy for the greatest benefit of all, ensuring conservation of Earth's Energy Resources. The main objective of ECM is to create public awareness and disseminating information for promotion and implementation of various measures contemplated in Energy Conservation Act, 2001 and beyond.
ECM Activities
The ECM since its inception is striving to promote energy conservation awareness in all walks of life of the society through functional groups for various sectors- Domestic, Industry, Agricultural, Commercial, Transportation, Educational Institutions, Renewable Sources of Energy, Standards & Labeling etc.
The Energy Savers Clubs were formed in some of the Industrial Areas, Schools and Colleges, with the idea of promoting energy efficient practices and technologies in the industry and creating awareness among the Students. The awareness programmes were conducted for Teachers, Professors and Principals.
During the last two and half years, ECM organized “Save Energy 2004” & “Save Energy 2005” Exhibitions to show case the energy efficient products & technologies and the potential of Renewable Sources of Energy and also organized the Round Table Discussions and Interactive Sessions on
- Energy Efficient Building Codes
- Standards and Labeling of products
- Energy Management in Hotels, Hospitals and Commercial Complexes
- Energy Efficient Lighting Systems & Solar- powered LED Lamps
- Evaluation of the energy efficiency of agriculture pump sets
- Bio-Fuels and Solar Water Heating Systems
ECM, with the active involvement and cooperation of NEDCAP observed the “National Energy Conservation Week” (NECW) from 14 th December, coinciding with its Annual Day, in 2004 and 2005. The important feature of 2005 NECW was to spread the activities to Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram, Visakhapatnam, Krishna , Guntur and Mahaboobnagar Districts and involving the students from colleges and schools.
The Industrial units, Hotels &
Hospitals identified to be following energy efficient
practices and conservation measures were awarded
“Certificates of Recognition” at the concluding session of
NECW. The students winning the prizes in various
competitions conducted by ECM were also awarded the prizes
at this function.
Interaction with Schools & Colleges
Three main attributes required for making any cause a success, are intrinsically woven and interrelated:
-
One must develop the right attitude towards an issue.
- One must understand the complete dimension and varied aspects of the issue.
- The habits must be inculcated to ensure the objective is fulfilled.
ECM has undertaken this task in Andhra Pradesh to achieve this objective and has targeted Schools and Colleges in Hyderabad and some districts to “Catch The Children Young” and involve these budding minds in the Cause of Energy Conservation and along with the related objectives of Environment ,Waste Management and prudent Resource Utilization
Partnering with other like- minded agencies like National Green Corps (NGC), PCRA ,PEAS,COVA ,SESI, SEEDS and other agencies, ECM has undertaken several programmes and conducted these programmes effectively.
-
"Reach the Teach”…an awareness programme to reorient the school
teachers regarding Energy Conservation. Over 500 teachers have participated
from over 50 schools during the last 2 years
- Over 5,000 school children and over 200 teachers have visited Save Energy
Exhibitions in 2004 and 2005 and seen the Energy Efficient Technologies
Processes and Products.
- Regular Competitions in area of Painting Essays and Slogans on the subject
of conservation. Over 200 Schools and over 3000 Children have participated
and the prize winners have been awarded handsome prizes-- courtesy Indian
Oil Corporation , SESI and other agencies.
- Awareness Programmes in Schools: ECM and associated agencies like PEAS
PCRA have visited over 150 schools in the last 2 years and addressed the
Students and Teachers and shared techniques for Energy Conservation
- Handouts and Pocket Calendars: Valuable energy conservation tips like CFL
Vs Bulbs, Tips to save Water, Fuel and Electricity have been printed in
Handouts and Pocket Calendars sponsored by APPCB and NEDCAP and
over 1,50,000 Pocket calendars and over 3,00,000 handouts have been
distributed of which a major portion was distributed in Schools and Colleges
- Competitions for College students were conducted twice so far and over 50
colleges participated in the Elocution Contest.
- Energy Savers Clubs were formed in over 50 Schools and 20 Colleges and a
Energy Monitor system was suggested which was implemented by several
schools and colleges.
ECM and its partner agencies have always involved Schools and Colleges for their enthusiasm and receptivity was found to be very high in the cause of Energy Conservation and Environment Protection and the focus will continue as these budding youngsters are the “Target Population” who will face the brunt of the Energy and Environment Crises and must be prepared to conserve for a meaningful existence.
Initiatives in Industrial Sector
Appreciating the positive motivational measure of according National Recognition ( Awards ) to Top Three Energy Conservation Performers in specified
sectors of Industry by Govt. of India on December 14, every year, ECM conceived of Energy Smart Certification to cover wider base of Organizations, especially the Small and Medium Enterprises ( SME's ).
ECM organized a Two-Day All India Seminar and a Round Table Discussion and crystallized thoughts on Energy Smart Standard ESS - 2006.
( analogous but superior to ISO- 9000/14000 ) with Star Rating System. After a successful field test at Vizag Steel Plant, the ESS=2006 is now undergoing revision for eventual final emergence, ere long.
Rural Activities
a) Awareness about Energy Conservation
b) Bio-Diesel Plantation
c) Grameena Nitya Deepotsavam (GND)
a) Awareness about Energy Conservation
The ECM, as part of its programme to extend its activities to rural areas, particularly remote areas, in collaboration with Vinobha Bhave Voluntary Organization (VBVO) Gadwal, had launched a two year programme in April 2005 to create awareness about energy conservation in 6 Mandals and Gadwal Town of Gadwal Division, covering about one lakh population, in Mahaboobnagar district
The VBVO, with the active support of ECM, during the last one and half years, had undertaken extensive survey of more than 15,000 households regarding the usage of various types of energy, income levels etc. On completion of the survey, massive and extensive awareness campaign was launched covering all the 6 Mandals and Gadwal Town by distributing handouts in Telugu highlighting the methods for saving energy-Electricity, LPG, Diesel etc-, by painting slogans on the walls at important places, conducting awareness programmes in schools etc
The use of CFLs was promoted by supplying limited quantities at subsidized rates. The National Energy Conservation Week was observed from 14 th to 21 st December 2005 in Gadwal Division, with the support of NEDCAP and the District Administration.
b) Bio-Diesel Plantation
The Chagadonni Gram Panchayat of Ghattu Mandal, in Gadwal division have resolved unanimously in the Grama Sabha held in July 2005, to constitute “Chagadonni Greenbelt Abhivruddi Committee” (CGAC), with the main objectives of * Promotion of Greenbelts and Protection of Forests * Prevention of Pollution and * Self Employment Creation.
The Memorandum of Understanding was executed between CGAC and VBVO for the development of Pongamia Plantation under Greenbelt development programme, as per the guidance of the district administration, in the vacant degraded Government land of about 201 acres in Survey No 421/1 of Chinnonipalle Village of Chagadonni Grama Panchayat. The Pongamia Plantation was undertaken in about 20 acres by October 2005, with the financial support of ECM and the cooperation of District Forest Department.
The preparatory work to undertake Pongamia Plantation in the balance 180 acres has been undertaken in July 2006 with the support of Social Forestry Department and the District Forest Department and is expected to be completed by October / November 2006.
C) Grameena Nitya Deepotsavam (GND)
The ECM, as part of its programme to extend its activities to the remote rural areas, in the 60 th year of our independence, has formulated “Grameena Nitya Deepotsavam” Scheme for supply of Solar powered 3W LED lamps to thousands of households, as per the guidelines listed below:
-
Each beneficiary to pay Rs.250 per lamp (16 % of the cost)
